Joseon Tongsinsa in 1764 with that which he exchanged with Ryukyu Diplomatic
Delegation in 1791, as a method to understand this Pildam–Changhwa.
Hansi in Joseon society was the literary genre related to the politics and diplo-
macy. Therefore, research of the meaning of Hansi in Joseon will help to understand
the society of Joseon.

On the frontier between Joseon and Qing dynasties from Jeong
Won Yong ’s ‘Bukhyengsurok (
北行隨錄
)’
In this thesis, I investigate cultural and geographical situations in a northern remote
region in the Joseon dynasty facing Qing (
) dynasty in the early 19th century by
using ‘Bukhyengsurok (
北行隨錄
)’written by JeongWonYong (
鄭元容
, 1783~1873).
‘Bukhyengsurok’ is a record of the situations in Hoeryong (
會寧
), Hamgyong
province (
咸鏡道
) where the northern remote region is located while Jeong Won
Yong was in charge of Hoeryong Magistrate since 1829, mentioning not only China
and Cheolryong (
鐵嶺
), but also Russia. Jeong Won Yong realized that Hoeryong
was an important area for the defense against the nearby countries, and thus started
investigating the topography, architecture, custom and names of places on the both
sides of the frontier between the Joseon and Qing (
) dynasties.
I first systematically investigate the structure of the records in ‘Bukhyengsurok’, i. e.,
what regions are described, the ordering of the descriptions, and how they are described.
Next, I focus on JeongWonYong’s unique thoughts about a border issue between
Joseon and Qing dynasties. The border is thought to be specified by Domun (
豆滿
)
River and Tumen (
土門
) River. There is, however, a controversy over the border issue
since some people consider that these rivers are the identical one while the others
do not. He indicated his thoughts on the basis of significant references and geodesic
records, which can be distinguished from the common thought in Joseon dynasty.
Lastly, I examine how Bukhyengsurok has been influential to politics, economy,
foreign diplomacy etc in Joseon dynasty. JeongWon Yong was an influential person
in politics and his book has been one of the most important literatures referred in
political decisions.
