This presentation proposes a discursive analysis of linguistic and cultural
translation in the re-making of Islamic normative texts in the historical context of
post-communist Dagestan. It concerns ‘new’ written languages of Islam brought
into the common use of Russia’s Muslims in the 20th century.
As such, translation always played an important role in transmitting of Islamic
knowledge. In the pre-modern (and colonial) times Dagestani Muslims learned, wrote
and read mostly in medieval Arabic and had to translate into it their contemporary
realities. Language repertoire much changed in the 20th century. The knowledge
of Arabic script degenerated. Following the Soviet reforms vernacular languages
were provided with unified written forms. Russian replaced Arabic as the language
of power, law and public culture. These radical changes influenced religious growth
of the 1990s when Islam returned in the public sphere. Now most texts of Islamic
learning are published in Russian and ‘national’ languages.
The cultural role of translations between Russian, Arabic and Caucasian vernac-
ular languages is still understudied. We know nothing of interpreters as actors of
Islamic knowledge, whose help today Muslim leaders often have recourse to when
translating their own works or the works attributed to them. Islamic writings include
numerous citations (and translations) without references, whose authors, titles and
meaning are often uncertain.
