The Effect of the Visits of Gamal Abdel Nasser to Moscow
on the Egyptian–Russian relations (1968–1970):
A Study of Unpublished Egyptian Documents
President GamalAbdel Nasser paid numerous visits to the Soviet Union during the
War ofAttrition between Egypt and Israel that followed the Israeli aggression against
theArab countries in June 1967. Because of different objectives and circumstances,
these visits varied between private and public. These visits focused on military and
political Egyptian issues, situation in the Middle East, different ways to strengthen
Arab-Soviet friendship, and other important questions.
President Gamal Abdel Nasser paid many visits to Moscow. The first of them
was in July 5, 1968, the second visit took place in the period from January 23rd to
25th in 1970. The talks included the issue of relationships with the United States,
the problem of Israeli crossing of the Suez Canal and ensuing battles along the
Canal, besides a very important question concerning offers for the construction
of a new Suez Canal. The last visits took place in June 30, and from 11 to 16 July
1970; these visits ended with an approval of the project to increase the Soviet help
in strengthening the Egyptian air forces.
This paper aims to shed light on the Egyptian-Soviet relations through a very
important period of history of Egypt and the Arab world, focusing on the Egyptian
president’s visits to Moscow, and his meetings with the Soviet leaders: Brezhnev—
