Т. 1 Çetin Aykurt (Bozok University, Yozgat, Turkey) The Official Chroniclers in the Ottoman Historiography The tradition of chroniclewriting in theOttomanEmpire entered a newstagewith the creation of the office of chroniclers ( vak’anüvislik ) at the beginning of the 18 th century by theGrandVizierAmcazadeHüseyinKöprülüPashawhowas in office from1697 to 1702. It is not possible to determine the main reason for the decision to establish the office of chroniclers. It might have resulted from the previous practice when Ottoman sultans used to encourage history writing. In addition, it can be argued that such an office could be considered helpful for the state itself. At the beginning of the 18 th century the Ottoman Empire confronted serious problems. For this reason revealing prestigious and positive sides of the past by the chroniclers could be regarded helpful for the consolidation of the state. In this study the peculiarities of the office of chroniclers and its contribution to the Ottoman historiography will be evaluated. Секция I.
