However, it did not lead to mass publication using woodblock prints, suggesting that their readers were still limited to a small number of the literati elite. This makes a sharp contrast to the cases of the late Ming and early Qing China and Edo Japan, where commercial printing culture flourished with the huge expansion of reading among commoners. Nevertheless, privately printed books in the early 18 th century Chosŏn are important as they materialized the elite’s taste and interest, and are an expression of individuality, which became the most distinctive characteristic of Chosŏn literature in the late 18 th century. Lee MinJoo (Seoul National University, Seoul) The Literary and Visual Adaptations of “Chunhyangjeon” This paper analyzes the features of literary and visual adaptations of a classic novel “Chunhyangjeon” (“Story of Chunhyang”) classified as the ‘Modern Chunhyangjeon ’ category, and examines how “Chunhyangjeon” has been perceived. “Chunhyangjeon” is a classic novel that has the largest number of adaptations in various genres including cartoons, novels, movies, and TV dramas. Therefore, a variety of studies has been done on media change aspects. The preceding studies were conducted largely from two perspectives. First, there are studies figuring out media transformation patterns of “Chunhyangjeon” 1 .
