One Migration, Two Different Historiographies:
The Migration of the Uzbeks and Kazakhs in the 15
th
Century
Nation-states use history to shape national identities. The Kazakh and Uzbek
peoples consist of some similar tribes, which had arrived to their recent territory
in the 15
th
century. They, however, interpret this historical migration from different
perspectives. The comprehension of their past and the differences in evaluating this
migration is related to their recent political needs in constructing a national iden-
tity. As history education has a crucial role in training the future generations, each
nation-state shapes its history education according to its needs of forming national
identities for its citizens, which is manifested in their history textbooks.
In Kazakhstan this historical migration is evaluated positively in glorifying the
legacy of the Eurasian nomadic empires parallel to their recent political grand vision
for Eurasia. Uzbekistan, on the other hand, cultivates a vision to become the heir of
CentralAsian civilizations. This vision is keen to underline the achievements of settled
civilizations within the borders of Uzbekistan. The migration of historical, nomadic
Uzbeks toUzbekistan contradicts this vision. Thus the coming of the nomadicUzbeks to
Uzbekistan is a subject of inferior significance in recent Uzbekistani historiography.
This study will exemplify the contradictory evaluation of this migration through
the recent history textbooks in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
