( SPbU , St. Petersburg) John Malcolm (1769-1833) in History of Iran The author of nine books on the history of the Orient 1 Sir John Malcolm entered life in 1782, as a cadetin the service of the East India Company; and a part of his success is to be ascribed to the zeal with which he applied himself at first to study the manners and languages of the Orient. Having distinguished himself with an extreme cruelty at the siege of Seringapatam (Srirangapatna) in 1792, he was appointed by Lord Cornwallis (173–1805) to the position of Persian military interpreter. In 1795 he was appointed secretary to the commander-in-chief. In 1797 he became captain; and from that time to 1799, he was engaged in a variety of important services, ter- minating at the fall of Seringapatam. At the end of 1799 John Malcolm was entrusted with Iranian mission in order to make the requisite arrangements for the renewal of the embassy. He accom- plished the mission in a manner that afforded the highest satisfaction for the East India Company. Tasks of the Malcolm’s mission were to investigate a political situation in Iran, to enter Iran to mainstream of the British policy and to force the Iranian government to obey the British rules in region of the Persian Gulf.
