Ольдерогге» When Nubians referred to the archaeological site, they usually called it Shaikh Nūr (Shaikh ‘Light’), the name of an Islamic holy man of long ago, A particular building in the archaeological site was known as Sheyh Nuurin Kid (the Stone of Shaikh Nūr). There was another Serre, Serrén Tino (Serre West), on the opposite bank of the river. The acute accent indicates a high tone which varies predictably according to the context. Tino (West) has an initial low tone. It allows the second syllable of Serré to retain its high tone in Serrén Tino. On the other hand, Mátto ‘East’ has an initial high tone. It depresses the second syllable of Serré to become a low tone in Serren Mátto. We had been alerted by colleagues in the Ghana Expedition to expect Nubian to be a tone language such as Ga, Twi and Fante. The Nubian residents were greatly distressed to be leaving their historic environ- ment forever. One of them, Eltigani Mursi, wrote a letter of protest to First Secretary Khrushchev. He received a reply typed in red ink from the Kremlin offering him a scholarship, and he completed his work successfully at Friendship University. By a strange coincidence, we encountered the young girl who was eventually to be his bride. This was even before he met her himself. Travelling in our antiquated military fire engine, we paid a visit to a friend in the remote village of `Amka in the Second Cataract of the Nile. There we met young Asmahān Al-Sharīf. She was fascinated by some multi-coloured clothes-pegs that Ann used to hang up some of our clothes to dry, but she was warned by an elderly gentleman not to become too interested in the clothes pegs.
