Т. 1. 2020 519 Olga Vecherina (Moscow State University of Psychology and Education, Moscow, Russia) 90th Anniversary of Tamil Studies in Russia: Stages of Development, Achievements, Problems Summary: The author identifies several stages in the development of Tamil studies in Russia, closely related to the features of socio-political development and state ideology. It is shown that the most fruitful period was in the late 1950s —mid 1970s, when a unified system of teaching and subsequent employment of qualified graduates was formed. This made it possible to develop academic discourse as a fundamental basis for the training of specialists and led to significant scholarly achievements. When in 1990s the academic Tamilology have lost their significance for power institutions, this led to destruction of this system and disappearance of relevant employment opportunities. For the past 30 years, this discipline has existed in a survival mode, when the main driving force was the personal enthusiasm of a few researchers who remained in the profession or engaged in it as a hobby. Nevertheless, the reasons for studying Tamil language, which is currently spoken by over 80 million people, and Tamil literature, the continuous development of which has been going on for more than two thousand years, the tasks of preserving and studying the rich Tamil cultural heritage, remained very significant for world-wide South Indian studies and, more broadly, for Oriental studies and humanities. The author believes that the urgent designing and implementation of a new workable model for development of Russian Tamilology in the system of university knowledge based on digital technologies and achievements of cognitive humanities is necessary. Otherwise, if the tradition is finally interrupted, the brilliant achievements of Russian scholars in the field of Tamil studies risk being completely lost. Keywords: Tamilology; Tamils; Tamil culture; Tamil studies; Dravidian studies; Bhakti; digital humanities. Вечерина О. П.
