(Far Eastern Federal University, Vladivostok) Okamoto Kanoko’s Creative Work 1 Okamoto Kanoko (1889−1939) showed her talent in poetry and prose. Having been influenced by such outstanding people as Tanizaki Jun’ichiro (1889−1965) and Yosano Akiko (1878−1942), she devoted herself to erotic subject in art. Kanoko admired Tanizaki’s conception of the demonic beauty. She lively painted a female body and a sensual attraction, and she showed the portraits of beauties with great passion. FollowingAkiko who sang passionate love and sexual freedom, Kanoko began to write the poems in a romantic style. She resorts to expressing hedonistic motives in poetry, aspires to creating sensual images, and declines to confirming in narcissism. The confessional feature claimed by the time of feminist awakening from Confucian restrictions is typical of her lyrics. Kanoko married Okamoto Ippei in the autumn of 1911. In February, 1911 their son Taro was born; however, the relationships of that married couple ended up. Creativity helps her overcome difficulty life situations − oni no jidai (hellish times), as she called that period of time (1912−1916) afterwards. Her first collection of poems tanka “Mild Jealosy” (“Karoki Netami”, 1912) consisted of seventy poems. Soon after that a second collection of poems “Love’s Anguish” (“Ai no Nayami”, 1918) was published. The collection of poems “Bathing” (“Yokushin”) was published in 1925. Finishing her poetic activity Kanoko published “My Last Poetry Collection” (“Wa ga Saishū Kashū”, 1929). In search of the life support Kanoko devotes herself to Buddhism.
