Meaning of Hansi (
漢詩
) in premodern East-Asian cultural
exchange, focused on Joseon • Japan • Ryukyu in the second
half of the 18th century
The literature takes over the role of literature in the premodern Korean society.
Especially, in Joseon, the genre of ‘Hansi (Chinese poem)’was important means for
the appointment and retention of public office. Joseon attached great importance to
Hansi in both internally and externally Joseon. The premodern East-Asian society
used common written language as Chinese character, and the diplomacy with other
countries took the Chinese character as the main means of writing. The poetry and
prose were media for the communicating with foreign people, among those, Hansi
was used for the method appearing the literary maturity of the country.
Since the Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592, in the case of ‘Joseon Tongsinsa
(Joseon missions to Japan)’ which was recommence by the request of the Japanese
side, the peace between the two countries was maintained, so the role of cultural
exchange ambassadors was taken gradually, therefore, ‘Pildam (Conversation
through writing)’— ’Changhwa (Responsory poetry)’ was shared by the writers in
Joseon and Japanese characters of various classes, and this record was delivered to
‘Pildamchanghwajip (Book of responsory writings)’.
In addition, Pildam–Changhwa of the people of two countries was focused on
‘Friendship’ generally, but there was difficulty to examine the real intention of
exchanged poems. This study will examine Hansi in the situation of cultural exchange
by comparing the Pildam–Changhwa that Japanese Okada Shinsen exchanged with
Секция VIII.
